Tax Notes
Jorge Castro, former Counselor to the IRS Commissioner and Congressional tax counsel, discussed Senator Mike Crapo's (R-ID) new role as the likely chair of the Senate Finance Committee. Castro emphasized the importance of Senator Crapo's role in drafting tax legislation next year, saying, "He's obviously going to be in the driver's seat from the Senate Republican tax policy perspective." Castro went on to note, "Senator Crapo will be seen as the quarterback, but I think having a [Senate Republican Leader] that's an ally who also understands the tax dynamics and what it takes to negotiate, is an advantage." Crapo's past bipartisan successes suggest that he will also look for opportunities to work across the aisle, especially as the Senate Finance Committee will see several new Democratic members in the coming year. According to Castro, "Senator Crapo is obviously very, very seasoned. This is not his first rodeo... He wields a lot of credibility and has a lot of deference from his Republican caucus in the Senate because he's smart, he's well-liked."
