"IRS Chief’s Fate Foggy with Trump Victory"

Bloomberg BNA Daily Tax Report

Larry Gibbs and Marc Gerson were quoted about the uncertain future of the role of the IRS commissioner in a Donald Trump presidency. “If you respect the idea that it should be apolitical then it should make no difference who’s in the White House,” said Gibbs, who served as Commissioner of the IRS from 1986 to 1989 during Ronald Reagan's administration.

Gerson recommended caution when approaching changes in the IRS, and said the size and influence of the agency cannot be ignored, especially as tax filing season looms. “Any transition, whether in the short term or at the end of his term, I think it has to be handled really well and thoughtfully and carefully,” said Gerson, who served as Republican tax counsel on the House Committee on Ways and Means during the George W. Bush administration.
