"Trump Made a Lot of Tax Promises. Can He Keep Them?"
CNN
Marc Gerson, former majority tax counsel for the House Committee on Ways and Means, discussed in CNN President-elect Donald Trump's ambitious tax proposals, which include promises to eliminate taxes on tips, overtime pay, and Social Security benefits. These proposals come with significant challenges, especially given concerns over the nation's rising debt and the complexity of passing such legislation. Gerson explained that while it's likely some of Trump's proposals will be incorporated into legislation, they may be scaled back or made temporary due to budget constraints. He said, "What I imagine will happen is that one or more of the Trump campaign tax proposals will be included as a kind of tip of the hat. Maybe it's done on a more scaled back basis or maybe it's done on a temporary basis." Gerson also pointed out that while some of Trump's promises, like eliminating taxes on tips, were quickly addressed with bills from GOP lawmakers, proposals such as exempting overtime pay or eliminating taxes on Social Security benefits are more complicated and would require a special legislative process called reconciliation.
