Subtitle
"Senate GOP Selects Taxwriter John Thune as Majority Leader"
Tax Notes
Marc Gerson, former majority tax counsel for the House Committee on Ways and Means, discussed the Senate GOP's selection of Senator John Thune (R-SD), a seasoned taxwriter and member of the Senate Committee on Finance, as their new majority leader for the 119th Congress, starting in January 2025. Thune, who has served in the Senate since 2005, will succeed Mitch McConnell (R-KY). Thune has been a key player in tax policy, and his leadership is expected to play a crucial role in advancing a reconciliation bill next year aimed at extending the Tax Cuts and Job Act of 2017 (TCJA). Regarding Thune's selection, Gerson said, "It is a very positive development for consideration of tax legislation that a taxwriter will be leading the Senate."
