Washington, DC, January 2, 2024 – Miller & Chevalier Chartered today announced the elections of Maria Lapetina and Ian Herbert as Members of the firm, effective January 1, 2024.

Maria Lapetina focuses her practice on internal and government investigations, cross-border litigation and arbitration, and the design and implementation of risk-based internal compliance programs. She regularly conducts investigations involving the Foreign Corrupt Practice Act (FCPA), anti-money laundering (AML) regulations, instances of insider trading, and allegations of potential accounting and disclosure irregularities. She is recognized for her extensive experience representing multinational companies, financial institutions, international development banks, and technology companies and their officers and directors in investigations before the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), and various other domestic and foreign regulatory agencies. Maria is fluent in Spanish and routinely handles legal matters in English and Spanish, adding a valuable dimension to her practice and to her clients.
Maria has been named a Latinvex Latin America Top 100 Female Lawyers for FCPA & Fraud for three years (2021-2023) and for Arbitration & Litigation for four years (2020-2023).

Ian Herbert's practice focuses on representing global companies, executives, and trustees in government investigations and associated litigation. He specializes in multi-jurisdictional and multi-disciplinary matters and excels in matters requiring complex legal analysis and factual development, global litigation strategy, and coordinated interaction with multiple regulators. As a key member of the firm's Trust and Family Office and Anti-Money Laundering practice groups, Ian provides counsel to individuals and entities, including multinational corporations, offshore trustees, and financial services companies, addressing a broad spectrum of issues such as foreign bribery, tax fraud, and other financial crimes. His extensive experience includes active engagement with the DOJ, SEC, and various federal and state regulatory agencies, coupled with a deep understanding of relevant international enforcement agencies. Ian is committed to his robust pro bono practice, advocating for individuals in criminal prosecutions and post-conviction hearings.
