What Michael Jordan Can Teach Us About Cross-Examination
ABA Trial Practice Newsletter
In this article, Michael Satin compares Michael Jordan to great trial lawyers, noting that both have been referred to as artists in their respective courts. But, Satin notes, "Jordan's artistry was merely one element of his game." Jordan became great because he "never stopped practicing the fundamentals. His preparation for each game was flawless. He made good decisions with the ball. These were the reasons that during games he could use his artistry to paint masterpieces." To that end, Satin urges trial lawyers not to try to "paint masterpieces" during cross-examination until they have applied the same strategy for success. This commentary on cross-examination delves into the psyche of trial lawyers, touches on pop culture as well as sports, and offers practical tips for practitioners and students alike.
